  • Impact of the Delta variant in Canary Islands

Impact of the Delta variant in Canary Islands

The latest variant of the Coronavirus, DELTA, has arrived in Spain and in particular in the Archipelago, impacting the health of many Canarians. We are within the group of 100 countries estimated to have people infected by this variant that appeared in India in October 2020, according to the World Health Organization (WHO), which has shown greater progress in contagion capacity than previous variants.

The World Health Organization has insistently warned about the characteristics of DELTA, for the awareness of the population worldwide, in view of the rapid increase in the number of contaminated countries and the danger of the variant, with greater consequences in poorly immunized populations. However, no country and no person is out of its ravages, because it continues to evolve and mutate.

Vaccinates are not exempt from getting infected because there are some cases reinfected with the full immune dose and others with the first dose. The number of young patients and some adolescents has also increased, which leads to think that the variant is becoming generalized and that no age or immunity period offers 100% security in the face of the possibility of COVID 19 contamination, DELTA variant .

COVID DELTA is detected in Spain in the week of May 3 to 9 and has been increasing, it has advanced significantly in several autonomous communities, including the Canary Islands. Given this, the World Health Organization (WHO, July 11, 2021) has warned of the "growing risk of hospitalizations in Spain due to the spread of this strain."

Undoubtedly, this risk in Spain is due, among other factors, to the increase in social interactions among young people who longed for a long time to enjoy moments of leisure, without any type of control; the belief that all danger has passed because a significant percentage of the population is fully or partially immunized; and the resistance of a few to continue using prevention measures.

The fact that at the central government level protection measures were made more flexible and the percentage of immunized people increased, may have made us think that we are not exposed or nothing will happen to us or our family, but the growth in the number of infected in a part of the Spanish communities, one of them the Canary Islands, shows us that we are more than ever exposed to this new strain.

In this situation, adults must assume the great responsibility of becoming multipliers of what happens with the DELTA variant. Immunization is essential because it reduces the possibility of contamination and / or minimizes the intensity of symptoms. We keep updated data on the cases of Delta Coronavirus that are occurring in our Autonomous Community, spread this data, talk to our children, grandchildren, siblings, parents, explaining the importance of our individual collaboration, because we are exposed to infect and get sick to any age due to COVID in its DELTA variant.

It is necessary to continue to maintain the basic protection measures such as the mask, social distance and hygiene measures, since the virus is spread through the tiny drops generated when a person with the virus coughs or sneezes. Not only by inhaling it, but also by touching a contaminated surface. Likewise, it is very important to avoid large concentrations until transmission is reduced in our country and in our Autonomous Community, so that it does not pose a threat to the health of the Canarian population.
