Is cataract surgery painful?

Published in: Ophthalmology

Dr. José Alberto Muiños Gómez Camacho

Cataract surgery is not painful because anesthetics are included in the care protocol. In addition to the question answered by the Doctor in this video, we include additional answers to the most frequently asked questions by patients in consultation:

  • Will I feel anything during the surgery? Most patients feel only gentle pressure during cataract removal surgery.
  • What will I see during surgery? Most patients only see the bright lights of the microscope.
  • Can I take any medicine for the nerves? Usually our anesthesia staff is present.
  • Should I take antibiotics before eye surgery? Antibiotics are not needed unless directed by the doctor before the operation.

  • How soon can I leave after having cataract removal surgery? Most patients are able to go within 1 to 2 hours after cataract surgery.
  • Are both eyes operated at the same time? The surgeries are performed 1 to 2 weeks apart (unless there is a reason to wait longer). If applicable, the doctor will inform you in consultation.
  • Will I be able to see immediately after the operation? Most patients' vision is quite blurry after surgery due to dilating drops and bright lights from the microscope.
  • What will happen before I am discharged? After surgery, the patient is taken to a recovery room where their vital signs (pulse, blood pressure, etc.) are checked.
  • Do all patients need an implant? The vast majority of patients require an implant to replace the lens or cataract. Only in very rare cases of extreme myopia is an implant not required.

El Dr. José Alberto Muiños Gómez-Camacho, medical director of Innova Ocular Muiños Clinic, Answer this frequently asked question about cataract surgery in this video.
